St Johns Wood
St John's Wood is a district in the City of Westminster in London near Regent's Park. It is around two and a half miles north west of Trafalgar Square. Once part of the Great Middlesex Forest, it was later owned by the Knights of St John of Jerusalem.
The area was developed from the early 19th century onwards. It was one of the first London suburbs to grow with a large amount of low density "villa" housing, as opposed to the terraced housing which was the norm in London up to the 19th century, even in expensive districts.
St John's Wood is a very well established and highly desirable residential area with numerous shopping and leisure facilities. The rolling acres of both Regents Park and Primrose Hill provide the area with wonderful outdoor recreational facilities. There are many architectural styles of property within the area including Victorian, Georgian, Edwardian, Art Deco and Regency. The areas are well served by public transport to both the City and the West End, as well as within easy commuting distance of Heathrow Airport.
St John's Wood is the location of Lords Cricket Ground, home of the MCC and original headquarters of the sport. It is also famous for Abbey Road Studios, where the Beatles recorded many records, notably Abbey Road, the cover of which features the band crossing the road.
